Knowledge database: Basic laws of chemistry: Boyle-Mariotte's law Boyle-Mariotte's or just Boyle's law states that the volume of a gas, at a constant temperature, is in an inversely proportional relationship with the pressure. This means that when one increases the pressure, the volume is reduced, and when the pressure is reduced, the volume increases. Of course, when viewed through the perspective of the other physical property, when one increases the volume, the pressure decreases, and when one reduces the volume, the pressure increases. This law can simply be expressed by the formula p*V = const., where p is the pressure and V is the volume. The product of these two physical properties is always constant, which means that when one of the properties is increased, the other one decreases and vice versa, as described in the preceding paragraph.
Additionally, this law can be visualized with the help of the graph shown above. The graph clearly shows that the volume and pressure are inversely proportional.
